#HaltonWasteChallenge Weekly! Week 1 of 52: Bike Trailer
Hello Friends of Halton Green Screens!
Welcome to Year 2 of the #HaltonWasteChallenge – #MindfulConsumption
This year, I am doing weekly challenges. I will try one new thing each week to reduce my consumption. We are broadening the focus this year to include all types of consumption to align with the focus of the Halton Environmental Networks’s 2017 Enviro Guide: Mindful Consumption. Join me for as many of them as you like, or try some of your own!
My motivation for Year 2 is twofold:
- All the moments from Year 1 when I knew I could still do better
- My desire to leave behind a healthy planet for my son
I hope to continue most of the weekly challenges past their assigned week. At the end of the year I will post about how I do with that! If there is anything you’d like to see me try for a week, just say so in the comments or on our Facebook page.
Week 1: Bike Trailer
October 20 – October 26
After completing the first year of the #HaltonWasteChallenge and publicly weighing my waste (here is the article in the Beaver if you are interested), I took a week off before starting Year 2 on October 20.
Before having a baby, I rode my bike a lot to get around and run errands. Since having a baby, I have been driving a lot. So my week 1 challenge to myself was to find and buy a good secondhand bike trailer for children. We spoke to our doctor at our little one’s 6 month appointment in mid-October to be sure he is strong enough, and we got the go ahead!
We found a nice bike trailer on Kijiji with the capacity to convert to a two-seater (planning ahead), and bought an extra hitch to be able to connect it to both my bike and Neelan’s.
It is easy to tow and the baby loves it! I am driving less now and feeling great now that I am more active on a regular basis.
Stay tuned for Week 2: Halloween
